Abstract

Are the vascular lesions of diabetes due to a hereditary defect or do the biochemical abnormalities of diabetes produce the vascular disease? Although the answer is not known, evidence suggests that the biochemical abnormalities of diabetes secondarily damage blood vessels. It therefore follows that prevention of vascular disease might be possible through control of the biochemical variables.
