Abstract
The most common hernias in infants and children are indirect inguinal hernias related to patency of the vaginal process of the peritoneum. Groin hernias in general should have early repair, with operation in a matter of hours if incarceration occurs. Umbilical hernias tend to close spontaneously or may be repaired by a simple operation if correction is indicated. The life-threatening hernias include posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia and omphalocele.
