Abstract

Since studies have linked the incidence of diverticulosis with a high-carbohydrate, low-residue diet, treatment in the United Kingdom has tended toward a low-sugar, high-residue diet. Symptoms may continue despite dietary treatment, however; hemorrhage may occur; or acute diverticulitis may be complicated by abscess, perforation, or fistula formation. In these situations, various surgical procedures are indicated.
