Nasogastric Tube Feedings

Practical Considerations in Prescription and Evaluation

, Ph.D. & , M.S.

Abstract

Tube feedings should provide moderate amounts of all essential nutrients in readily available form, including sufficient amounts of minerals and trace elements as well as sufficient fat and adequate (but not excessive) calories and protein. The prescription of a suitable tube-feeding formula must take into account a great many factors which influence the effectiveness of this manner of feeding for a given patient. Studies suggest that tube feedings prepared in hospital kitchens often may lack necessary minerals and vitamins.
