The Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Abstract

Any one of a number of physiologic insults can bring about alveolar capillary membrane damage and the adult respiratory distress syndrome. Definitive diagnosis often is delayed because symptoms and laboratory data, other than arterial blood gas values, are nonspecific. Early, vigorous therapy can prevent progressive respiratory failure.
