Abstract

The presence of ethanol, alone or with other chemicals, in drug-intoxicated patients is often overlooked. In this study, ethanol was present in almost 20% of specimens sent from hospital emergency rooms for other toxicologic analyses. By failing to request ethanol determinations, physicians overlook a simple, inexpensive laboratory test that produces a high yield of illuminating data.
