Abnormalities of blood gas exchange in copd

Abstract

The concept of poorly ventilated lung spaces, known collectively as the slow space, is central to an understanding of the disturbance in blood gas exchange in CORD. An admixture of poorly oxygenated blood from the slow space causes hypoxemia in both the “pink puffer” and the “blue bloater,” but the mechanism differs.
