Ventilatory failure in copd

Abstract

Maintaining normal alveolar ventilation often becomes impossible in COPD. When this happens, the PCO2 rises and the PO2 falls. Ventilatory failure developing in this setting generally is an extension of the chronic disease. Many of the patients are chronically in a state of “ventilatory failure” as commonly defined.
