Abstract

Severe or unusually prolonged neonatal jaundice can occur from many causes. With the advent of Rho (D) immune globulin (human), the incidence of erythroblastosis fetalis, a major cause, has been greatly reduced. However, the premature infant is at high risk for kernicterus at bilirubin levels lower than previously believed.
