Abstract

Glomerulonephritis appears to begin with an immunologic process in at least four out of five cases. Either antibodies specific for antigens in the glomerular basement membrane or antibodies reacting with circulating, nonglomerular antigens can trigger the injury. The two mechanisms are distinguishable by immunofluorescence.
