Abstract

In an area with a population of 1 million and a birth rate of 17 per thousand, 425 newborn infants (5% of deliveries) will be sick and about half of them will need intensive care. A regional plan that centers care in a large general hospital may be the most efficient way to increase the rate of survival and decrease morbidity in these small patients.
