Abstract

Corticosteroids should be used only when clearly indicated, for limited periods, and under constant vigilance for side effects. Serious and acute illnesses require daily therapy, usually for several weeks or months. Alternate-day therapy is reserved for maintenance care, and its purpose is to lessen side effects, particularly pituitary-adrenal suppression.
