Abstract

As someone once stated, Dr. Levitt has given “class to gas” and “status to flatus” through his elegant scientific contributions. An understanding of the factors responsible for net luminal gas accumulation should ultimately result in more specific therapy. Our present clinical obligation (and limitation) is to exclude organic disease as a cause of symptoms, inquire into possible contributions of diet, eliminate or ameliorate conditions predisposing to aerophagia, and then attempt to regulate bowel habit.—AR
