Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis

Abstract

Various theories have been proposed regarding the etiology of air cysts in the subserosal or submucosal layer of the gastrointestinal tract. Mechanical intestinal obstruction and possibly a paralytic condition in a segment of small intestine precipitated the signs and symptoms in the two cases described, but whether one or both are cause or effect of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis remains to be proved.
