Anemia in Adolescence

1. Disturbances of Iron Balance

Abstract

The primary cause of anemia in adolescents is negative iron balance. This is primarily due to menstrual iron loss in females and growth demands plus borderline diets in males. Normal blood indexes for this age group are proposed. Low values cannot be attributed to simple iron deficiency without a thorough search for occult blood loss or other underlying illness.
