Abstract

New patient populations—drug users and patients who have undergone open heart surgery—have changed the clinical presentation of endocarditis. Chemotherapeutic approaches have also changed as different causative bacteria have been found. The primary cause of death is now congestive heart failure, and surgery has assumed new and important roles in therapy.—HCN
