Recognition, Assessment, and Treatment

Abstract

Assessment of the respiratory tract is a critical step in evaluating burn patients. The respiratory apparatus may have sustained direct or indirect damage, and the patient may need immediate airway clearance and ventilatory support. Sequential evaluation of respiratory function via arterial blood gas monitoring is mandatory. Pulmonary supportive care is also sequentially escalated, and later de-escalated, as necessary.
