Atypical Mycobacteria

A Factor to Consider in Lung Disease

Abstract

Atypical mycobacteria are generally innocuous but can cause pulmonary disease that is difficult to differentiate from tuberculosis except on culture. Men over age 40 seem to be particularly susceptible. Some organisms cause lymphadenitis in children. Treatment generally involves multiple-drug regimens and possibly surgery.
