Abstract
Treating hypertension on the basis of causative mechanisms is difficult because, other than diuretics, most drugs that favorably affect one mechanism have counterproductive effects on others. A drug regimen must thus be set up empirically for each patient. To improve compliance, the regimen should be kept simple and inexpensive, using drugs that cause as few side effects as possible.
