Abstract
Four types of drugs are of value in treating asthma: Sympathomimetics are effective for the relief of acute symptoms; theophylline and cromolyn are effective and safe for long-term suppression; and corticosteroids administered daily are the most potent medications for controlling severe symptoms. Short-acting corticosteroids administered orally on alternate days and new inhalants may prove safe for long-term suppression of refractory disabling chronic disease.
