Abnormal patency of the eustachian tube

Abstract

When a patient complains of a “plugged” ear, the eustachian tube Is often assumed to be congested, However, it may be abnormally patent. By otoscopic observation of the tympanic membrane while the patient performs simple maneuvers, the physician may be able to detect abnormal patency.
