Abstract

Ascitic fluid withdrawn by paracentesis can provide valuable diagnostic information. It can be analyzed for amylase, protein, and fat concentrations and for blood cell count; cultured; and examined cytologically, depending on circumstances. Results should either corroborate or indicate the need for reevaluation of the clinical diagnosis.
