Abstract
Elemental enteral alimentation (EEA) is effective in achieving positive nitrogen balance in hospitalized patients. Because it is given via the gastrointestinal tract, it is less apt to cause complications than is total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Thus, if the intestinal tract is functional, use of EEA is preferred to use of TPN.
