Abstract

Hyponatremia may reflect sodium loss or sodium gain with water excess, whereas hypernatremia occurs with inadequate water intake or excessive water loss. Most helpful in identifying the cause of sodium and water imbalance are determinations of serum sodium concentration and osmolality.
