Abstract

Ventilation, oxygenation, and acid-base disturbances can be identified by characteristic changes in pH and blood gas values. In ventilation disorders, the primary change is in partial pressure of carbon dioxide; in oxygenation disorders, the primary change is in partial pressure of oxygen. Acid-base imbalance is reflected in pH and bicarbonate concentration.
