POISONING

Poisoning in children

An approach for the primary physician

Pages 177-186 | Published online: 07 Jul 2016

Abstract

Most accidental poisonings involve ingestion of household products or nonprescription drugs by children. A high index of suspicion and knowledge of certain clues will help the primary physician in recognizing cases of toxic ingestion. Treatment of asymptomatic or uncomplicated cases basically involves emptying the stomach and administering charcoal or an appropriate antidote.
