Pages 179-184 | Published online: 07 Jul 2016

Abstract

This article, the first of two on laboratory aspects of mononucleosis, presents a simplified approach to diagnosis of acute infectious mononucleosis based on a rapid screening test for heterophil antibodies and analysis of a blood smear for atypical lymphocytes. Diagnosis of the cytomegalovirus-mononucleosis syndrome will be discussed next month.
