Abstract
Even in severely retarded persons, etiologic studies can be conducted in a carefully focused and usually inexpensive manner and still arrive at a high proportion of informative diagnoses. In this article, the essential steps in such a workup are outlined and the breakdown of mental retardation into various types—with their respective recurrence risks—is illustrated by findings in a large Wisconsin study.
