Calcium and phosphorus studies

Interpretation of results and strategies for further testing

Pages 69-79 | Published online: 07 Jul 2016

Abstract

The causes of abnormal calcium and phosphorus values are many and varied, including derangements of the hormones that control metabolism of these substances and diseases of organs where metabolism takes place. In most cases, the diagnostic possibilities can be narrowed considerably by basic serum tests. If the cause is still not apparent, more complex tests, such as isoenzyme, parathormone, and calcidiol assays, may be necessary.
