Etiologic diagnosis of acute pneumonia in adults

Abstract

The etiologic diagnosis of pneumonia is assuming greater importance as more pathogens are discovered and as the number of elderly and immunosuppressed persons in the population grows. Specific diagnosis depends on knowledge of the causative pathogens and on proper use of the procedures—noninvasive and invasive—for their identification.
