Do atherosclerotic plaques in humans really regress? The exciting possibility is explored in this article. Dr Malinow, who has studied the mechanisms involved in regression of atherosclerosis in animals, suggests two mechanisms that probably occur in humans. One involves nutritionally or medicinally induced changes in plasma lipid levels, and the other is seemingly unrelated to changes in plasma lipid levels. Supporting data from the literature are reviewed and tabulated. “All physicians should read this!” was one reviewer's enthusiastic comment.
