Poison ivy and other Toxicodendron species, fungi, herpesvirus, biting insects, and mites often cause skin eruptions that are treated by the primary care physician. Most of these dermatoses can be identified by routine physical examination and simple laboratory studies. In many instances the distinctive character of the individual skin lesions and the overall distribution of the eruption are diagnostic. Therefore, Dr Caserio deals principally with treatment of the lesions that commonly result from contact with these ubiquitous agents.
