Relief of pain in the postoperative period is a most important aspect of the surgical management of any problem. The traditional use of intramuscular injection of narcotic on a specific schedule, however, has certain associated limitations and problems. Will the newer techniques making use of intravenous infusion and/or epidural administration prove superior? Dr Stanley discusses these techniques, their advantages and disadvantages.
