Contrary to common belief, most genetic diseases are far from rare and, in fact, are a significant cause of illness and death. In this article, Dr Gelehrter explains how to obtain a family history that will aid in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of hereditary disease. He also discusses indications for and the nature of medical genetics services for patients with known or suspected genetic disorders, with emphasis on genetic counseling for the entire family.
