Pages 307-314 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

High-altitude sickness has plagued travelers and fascinated researchers for centuries. In this, the first of two articles, Dr Charles S. Houston, a world-renowned authority in the field, gives a historical perspective on high-altitude research as seen from the decompression chamber. In his second article, to be published next month, Dr Houston offers a clinical guide to altitude sickness, with recommendations for advising patients contemplating mountain travel.
