Thousands of people are victims of submersion accidents each year. As Dr Redding points out, drowning takes the lives of more young people than any single disease. Yet only recently have we learned that apparently lifeless victims of drowning can sometimes be saved with intensive and unremitting resuscitation and follow-up measures. Dr Redding discusses the physiologic changes that take place during drowning, management procedures, and the importance of observation for 24 hours or more even if the patient seems relatively unharmed.
