Because cervical degenerative arthritis is so common with aging, its diagnosis and treatment should be familiar to all primary care physicians. The condition is a frequent cause of chronic neck and shoulder pain and with progression can bring about nerve root compression and subsequent arm pain or weakness. Dr Hirsh's article examines the etiology of cervical degenerative arthritis and outlines a conservative treatment plan for initial management as well as surgical approaches for cases of persistent pain or significant neurologic deficits.
