“Melanoma is a word, not a sentence,” according to Dr Neville Davis, Coordinator of the Queensland [Australia] Melanoma Project Primary care physicians have the greatest opportunity to recognize malignant melanoma early, when it is curable. How closely do you examine a patient's skin? Do you use a good light and magnifying lens to examine pigmented lesions? Have you considered a “mole map” to aid you? The following discussion will help you think “melanoma” when you evaluate any pigmented skin lesion.
