The discovery of a viral cause for some of the rare, mysterious, and still incurable diseases of the human CNS has prompted a great deal of interest in these diseases. It is hoped that the information gained will be applicable to the more common and also incurable CNS diseases. Part 1 of this article, which begins on page 99, discusses diseases caused by conventional viruses. Part 2 covers the subacute spongiform encephalopathies, which are caused by atypical viruses.
