At least until the recent episodes involving criminally adulterated pain medication, probably no medical subject has dominated the headlines in the lay press these past few years as much as toxic shock syndrome. The fact that the disease almost exclusively affects healthy young women, its potential seriousness, and its legal implications have combined to evoke great public interest. This review covers essentially all aspects of the current knowledge about this still new syndrome.
