Dysmenorrhea is a common gynecologic complaint with widespread physical, economic, and sociologic implications. Painful menses results in a staggering number of lost work hours annually. This article reviews the recent advances relating to our understanding of the physiologic and biochemical causes of dysmenorrhea and the available treatment regimens.
