Carotid angiography certainly provides good information in patients with threatened stroke, but it clearly has accompanying dangers. Noninvasive tests for studying cerebral vasculature and identifying patients for whom invasive testing is warranted thus have real advantages. In this two-part article, which one neurologist” reviewer called the “best summary” of the subject he had seen and a “good reference for the future,” Dr Anderson describes the basis for noninvasive methodologies and describes the specific techniques in use. Part 2, beginning on page 249, discusses the predictive performance of the techniques.
