When to suspect the wily nematode

This reminder of the dangers of Strongyloides infection is intended for all physicians, not just those in endemic areas. With today's mobile population, physicians in areas where strongyloidiasis is not endemic may encounter a case and need to be aware of the typical and atypical manifestations of the disease. Physicians in endemic areas no doubt are familiar with the typical manifestations but might not suspect a case presenting, for example, as an exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease. In this article, Dr Reddy and associates review their findings in 33 patients and describe four intriguing cases.
