Millions of Americans have been and are still being exposed to time bombs in the form of thousands of asbestos-containing products. in the June 1978 issue of POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE (page 48), Dr Varkey addressed the long-range fallout from these potentially lethal products—asbestosis, malignant neoplastic diseases, and nonmalignant pleural disorders. New information on nonoccupational exposure to asbestos in myriad forms and on the relationship of cigarette smoking to asbestos exposure, the application of new technology such as computed tomography and electron microscopy to diagnosis of asbestos-related diseases, and new standards of asbestos exposure suggested the need to update that earlier report.
