Much has been written about chemotherapy for acute nonlymphocytic leukemia in adults—agents available, regimens used, side effects, prognosis. Less attention has been paid to the diagnostic evaluation and pretreatment assessment, which usually fall within the province of the primary care physician. Yet, without prompt, specific diagnosis and identification of patient factors that influence outcome, the best therapy comes to naught Drs Duane and Peterson describe in detail the evaluation procedure they use to optimize the chance for cure in patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.
