As the proportion of elderly persons in the population increases, the need for better ways to detect, control, and even cure organic mental disorders becomes greater. While research efforts continue in these areas, Dr Freedman notes that the primary care physician can do much to protect the patient's quality of life by focusing on early and accurate diagnosis, with an emphasis on identification of the underlying causes—many of which are reversible.
