The major advances in management of coronary heart disease of the past few decades have resulted in prolongation of life for many patients. This is most apparent today in the care of acute myocardial infarction. However, as Dr Chapman points out in this article, sudden death is still a very real possibility within the first few hours after onset of infarction. Thus, successful early management requires clinical acumen and knowledge of the latest management techniques.
