Is end-stage renal disease inevitable?

Once persistent proteinuria develops in a diabetic patient, end-stage renal disease seems to be only a question of time. The outcome used to be a foregone conclusion. Now, however, some successes are being seen with improved therapies and new treatments, such as combined pancreas-kidney transplant surgery. Dr Bogusky emphasizes measures that help to delay progression of nephropathy to end-stage renal disease and discusses options available when this stage is reached.
