Typically, Rho(D) immune globulin is used in Rho(D)-negative women after delivery of an Rho(D)-positive infant. However, there are other specific circumstances in which use of this agent, which has had a dramatic impact on the incidence of hemolytic disease in newborns, can prevent sensitization. Dr Lavery's article is intended as an up-to-date review of the various indications for Rho(D) immune globulin, including prophylaxis, rather than of its use in management of individual patients.
