Helping those at risk survive

Widespread training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation has proved helpful in increasing the survival rate of sudden cardiac death victims in the United States. However, a greater impact on reducing incidence of such events can be made if persons at risk can be identified and prophylactic therapy instituted. Here Dr Malacoff discusses two specific groups of patients who are at known risk for sudden cardiac death and several techniques of therapeutic intervention designed to prevent a lethal outcome.
